As an EMDR therapist specializing in adult clients, I’ve witnessed the profound impact of this approach on driving-related anxieties. In this post, I’ll share how EMDR therapy helped one of my clients, John, overcome his debilitating fear of highway driving. EMDR is a very powerful tool I use for combating driving anxiety.
John had long struggled with anxiety behind the wheel, but his fear reached new heights on busy highways. The thought of merging, changing lanes, and navigating heavy traffic would trigger intense physical symptoms like racing heart and sweaty palms. To avoid the anxiety, John would take lengthy detours, limiting his ability to fully participate in work and social activities.
Recognizing the need for a more effective solution, we incorporated Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) therapy into John’s treatment plan. EMDR helps reprocess traumatic memories and their associated emotions, beliefs, and physical sensations.
During EMDR sessions, John would recall distressing driving events while I guided him through bilateral stimulation. Over several sessions, his perspective and emotional response shifted dramatically. What was once a source of debilitating fear became manageable, even empowering.

To reinforce John’s progress, we incorporated exposure exercises where he gradually practiced highway driving, starting with short distances and increasing difficulty. With each successful trip, his confidence grew, and his physical symptoms diminished.
EMDR wasn’t the only tool. John’s treatment also included Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Somatic Mindfulness Practice (SMP) to develop adaptive coping strategies.
Through this multifaceted approach, John was able to overcome his driving anxiety. He now reports feeling confident and relaxed behind the wheel, even on busy highways. The benefits extend to his overall well-being, including reduced stress and improved mood.
If you or a loved one struggle with driving-related anxiety, I encourage you to explore EMDR therapy, combined with other evidence-based approaches like CBT and SMP. By addressing the root causes, you can reclaim your freedom on the road and experience the positive impact on your life.
