Online EMDR Therapy: How It Works and What You Need to Know

I’ve been practicing online EMDR therapy since COVID changed the way we do almost everything, and let me tell you—it’s been a game changer. At first, many people (including therapists) were skeptical about whether EMDR could work effectively in a virtual setting. But after years of working with clients online, I’ve seen incredible results. And the research backs it up: online EMDR therapy is just as effective as in-person sessions for processing trauma and reducing distressing symptoms.

What Is EMDR Therapy?

EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is a structured therapy designed to help people process distressing memories and traumas. It involves bilateral stimulation—typically through guided eye movements, tapping, or auditory tones—to help the brain reprocess traumatic experiences in a way that reduces their emotional charge. It’s widely used to treat PTSD, anxiety, depression, and even chronic pain.

How Does Online EMDR Work?

You might be wondering: How does EMDR work online if we’re not in the same room? The answer is: technology has made it seamless. Here’s how it typically goes:

  1. Video Platform – We connect through a secure video call, just like any other online therapy session.
  2. Bilateral Stimulation (BLS) – Instead of me guiding your eye movements in person, I use tools like:
    • On-screen moving dots that you track with your eyes.
    • Audio tones alternating in each ear through headphones.
    • Tactile stimulation, like tapping on your shoulders or knees.
    • We find 2 objects in your space that work for the eye movements and we get creative together
  3. Processing – Just like in traditional EMDR, we work through distressing memories, reducing their emotional intensity and helping you gain a new, more adaptive perspective.

Is Online EMDR Therapy Effective?

Absolutely. I’ve seen firsthand how online EMDR has helped my clients overcome trauma, anxiety, and negative beliefs. But don’t just take my word for it—research supports it too.

A 2021 study published in the Journal of EMDR Practice and Research found that online EMDR therapy is just as effective as in-person treatment for PTSD and other trauma-related disorders. Another study from 2022 confirmed that remote EMDR sessions lead to significant reductions in distress and improved mental health outcomes. I have practiced EMDR in person and online and let me tell you that it’s as powerful online as face to face.

Benefits of Online EMDR Therapy

One of the biggest advantages of online EMDR therapy is accessibility. Here’s why many people prefer it:

  • Convenience – No need to commute to a therapist’s office. You can do therapy from the comfort of your home.
  • Greater Comfort – Being in a familiar environment can make processing trauma easier.
  • Expanded Access – You can work with a therapist who specializes in EMDR, even if they’re not in your city or country.
  • Consistency – Life gets busy, but online therapy makes it easier to stay consistent with sessions.

What You Need for a Successful Online EMDR Session

If you’re considering online EMDR therapy, here’s what you need to set yourself up for success:

  1. A Quiet, Private Space – Somewhere you feel safe and won’t be interrupted.
  2. A Stable Internet Connection – To ensure smooth communication and uninterrupted sessions.
  3. Headphones – For bilateral auditory stimulation and better focus.
  4. A Comfortable Chair – Since sessions can be emotionally intense, a cozy setup helps.
  5. Openness to the Process – Online therapy might feel different at first, but trust the process—it works!

Common Concerns About Online EMDR Therapy

Many people worry that online therapy won’t feel the same as in-person therapy. Here are some common concerns and my take on them:

  • “Will I feel as connected to my therapist?” – Yes! Video calls allow for just as much emotional connection and support. My clients like me ( or at least I want to think so ) the same or even more and we have never met in person.
  • “What if I get overwhelmed?” – We always have grounding techniques ready to help you regulate emotions. I never work and push someone more than he wants to be pushed. I respect your tolerance and I always try to boost you and support you to the point that you can handle.
  • “Will the technology fail?” – Technical issues happen occasionally, but we always have backup plans. In my 6 years practicing online I have never had more than 5 minute issue that wasn’t resolved. It’s pretty rare these days to not have internet or sound!
