However, diving straight into EMDR processing without proper preparation can be overwhelming for clients. That’s where resourcing comes in.

Resourcing is an essential phase of EMDR that helps clients feel grounded, empowered, and resourced before tackling traumatic memories. By cultivating internal and external resources, clients develop a stronger foundation to navigate the ups and downs of EMDR treatment. In fact, research shows that effective resourcing is a key predictor of successful EMDR outcomes.

In my online therapy practice, I work closely with clients to implement a variety of resourcing techniques. These help enhance their sense of safety, stability, and resilience – critical factors for getting the most out of EMDR. Here are 5 powerful resourcing methods I frequently utilize:

The Safe/Calm Place Visualization: Clients vividly imagine a peaceful, comforting setting where they feel completely at ease. This “safe haven” becomes an anchor they can return to during challenging EMDR sessions. Not only does it provide a sense of security, but it also activates the parasympathetic nervous system, promoting relaxation.

The Resource Tide Meditation: Clients picture themselves on the shore, watching a restorative “resource tide” roll in and wash over them. As each wave carries positive resources like strength, clarity, or self-compassion, clients fully embody these gifts. This exercise helps clients cultivate and access their inner reserves.

The Container Technique: Clients visualize securely storing any distressing thoughts or memories in a safe container, allowing them to focus on processing during EMDR without becoming overwhelmed. This technique dovetails well with EMDR’s emphasis on compartmentalization and gradual exposure.

The Nurturing Figure Visualization: Clients imagine a caring, protective figure offering support and encouragement. This nurturing presence can provide a sense of safety, comfort, and self-compassion – all essential for navigating the emotional intensity of EMDR.

Grounding Through the Senses: Clients tune into their immediate environment, noticing sensory details to feel firmly rooted in the present moment. This simple practice quickly restores a sense of calm and stability, counteracting the physiological effects of trauma.

Consistent practice is key for clients to fully integrate these resourcing techniques. I recommend they dedicate 5-10 minutes each day to reconnecting with their internal and external resources. This not only supports the EMDR process, but also enhances their overall well-being and resilience.

Resourcing isn’t just a one-time exercise – it’s an ongoing practice that can empower clients throughout EMDR therapy and beyond. By cultivating a strong foundation of inner strength and stability, they’ll be well-equipped to navigate the challenges of trauma recovery with courage and self-compassion.

EMDR therapy

The Synergy of Resourcing, EMDR, and Other Therapies

While resourcing is especially crucial for EMDR, it also complements other evidence-based therapies I utilize in my practice, such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Somatic Mindfulness Practices (SMP).

In CBT, clients learn to identify and challenge unhelpful thought patterns. Resourcing can provide a stabilizing counterpoint to this cognitive work, helping clients access positive resources and coping strategies when faced with distressing thoughts or emotions.

For example, a client may use the Safe/Calm Place visualization to soothe themselves during moments of anxiety, or the Nurturing Figure exercise to cultivate self-compassion when confronting negative self-beliefs. This integration of cognitive and somatic/emotional resources enhances clients’ overall resilience.

Similarly, SMP techniques like mindful body awareness and controlled breathing can be valuable resourcing tools. By grounding in present-moment sensations, clients tap into the physiological resources of the body to regulate emotions and stay centered. This grounds the EMDR process in embodied experience.

As an EMDR therapist, I always prioritize this vital preparatory phase. Resourcing lays the foundation for clients to engage in EMDR processing with greater safety, stability, and agency. With the right tools and mindset, they can approach EMDR with confidence and make the most of this transformative therapy.

The Ongoing Benefits of Resourcing

Resourcing doesn’t just prepare clients for EMDR – it’s an invaluable set of lifelong skills. The resources and coping strategies clients cultivate can be applied far beyond the therapy room, empowering them to better manage stress, navigate life challenges, and maintain overall well-being.

For example, a client who has practiced the Resource Tide meditation may find themselves naturally drawing on those calming, replenishing resources during a difficult work meeting or family conflict. The Safe/Calm Place they’ve developed can become a reliable source of comfort during times of uncertainty or anxiety.

Additionally, the self-compassion and grounding techniques learned through resourcing can have a positive ripple effect. Clients may find themselves treating themselves with more kindness, or being better able to soothe and regulate their emotions. This enhanced self-care and resilience can lead to improved relationships, productivity, and overall quality of life.

So as an EMDR therapist, I make resourcing a central part of my clinical approach. By helping clients establish a strong foundation of internal and external resources, I set them up for success not only in EMDR, but in all areas of their lives. It’s a gift that keeps on giving, long after our therapy work is complete.

Resourcing is an essential phase of EMDR that helps clients feel grounded, empowered, and resourced before tackling traumatic memories.
