If you’ve ever felt your heart race for no reason, struggled with dizziness, or had a tight chest that won’t go away, you know exactly what I mean. As a therapist, I hear it all the time: “I think something is wrong with me physically, but the doctor says I’m fine.” That’s because anxiety doesn’t just create mental stress; it has a huge impact on your nervous system. Let’s break down why anxiety makes your body feel like it’s in overdrive—and how to calm it down. Physical symptoms of anxiety are often there so let’s dive in. Of course I am not a physical doctor so the first thing to do if you are experiencing physical symptoms is to consult with your primary care doctor to make sure and eliminate any physical causes of your symptoms.

Why Anxiety Feels Physical

When you’re anxious, your brain sends a message to your body: Something is wrong. Get ready to fight or run. This is the fight-or-flight response, an ancient survival mechanism designed to protect you from danger. The problem? Your brain doesn’t know the difference between a real threat and an imagined one, so it activates this response even when you’re just worried about a meeting, a relationship, or something you saw on social media.

Common Physical Symptoms of Anxiety

Here are some of the most common ways anxiety shows up in your body:

✅ Racing Heart & Palpitations – Your body is preparing to react, pumping more blood to your muscles in case you need to “escape.” ✅ Shortness of Breath – Shallow breathing is part of the fight-or-flight response, but it can make you feel like you’re not getting enough air (even though you are). ✅ Dizziness & Lightheadedness – Your blood flow changes when you’re anxious, sometimes making you feel unsteady. ✅ Tight Chest & Muscle Tension – Your body braces itself for “impact,” causing tightness in your chest, shoulders, or jaw. ✅ Nausea & Stomach Issues – Anxiety affects digestion, leading to nausea, stomach pain, or even IBS-like symptoms. ✅ Sweating & Hot Flashes – Your body thinks it needs to cool down because it’s in a high-alert state.

Sound familiar? You’re not alone. And the best part? You can take back control.

How to Calm Your Body When Anxiety Takes Over

Now that you know why anxiety affects your body, let’s talk about how to calm things down.

1. Breathe Like You Mean It

Slow, deep breathing tells your nervous system: We’re safe. Try the 4-7-8 method: inhale for 4 seconds, hold for 7, exhale for 8. Repeat 4 times and notice the difference.

2. Move Your Body

Exercise isn’t just for fitness—it helps burn off excess adrenaline. A quick walk, stretch, or dance break can reset your system fast.

3. Ground Yourself in the Present

Try the 5-4-3-2-1 method: name 5 things you see, 4 things you can touch, 3 things you hear, 2 things you smell, and 1 thing you taste. This pulls you out of your anxious mind and into reality.

4. Shake It Off (Literally)

Animals shake after stress—humans should too. Try shaking out your hands, arms, and legs for 30 seconds. It releases stored tension in your body.

5. Reassure Yourself: It’s Just Anxiety

When symptoms hit, remind yourself: This is my body reacting to stress. I’m not in danger. This will pass.

Final Thoughts: Your Body is on Your Side

Anxiety might trick your body into thinking something is wrong, but the truth is, your body is just trying to protect you. The more you work with it rather than against it, the more control you gain over your symptoms. You’re not broken—you’re just experiencing an overactive survival response. And with the right tools, you can train your system to feel safe again.

Anxiety isn’t just in your head—it’s in your body, too.
