Anxiety and depression don\u2019t show up the same way for everyone. Some people feel it in their bodies\u2014tightness in the chest, racing heart, constant fatigue. Others feel it in their thoughts\u2014overanalyzing everything, spiraling into worst-case scenarios, or feeling numb and disconnected from life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That\u2019s why I draw from an <strong>integrated approach<\/strong>, combining methods like:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p> <strong>Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)<\/strong> \u2013 to identify and challenge negative thought patterns.<br> <strong>Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR)<\/strong> \u2013 to process trauma and stuck emotional responses.<br> <strong>Sensory Motor Psychotherapy (SMP)<\/strong> \u2013 to connect with the body and release trauma stored in the nervous system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The goal isn\u2019t to \u201ctreat a symptom.\u201d The goal is to <strong>understand the root of your anxiety and depression<\/strong>, and help you heal from the inside out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>How My Early Work Shaped My Approach<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Earlier in my career, I worked with <strong>war veterans<\/strong> who were struggling with intense anxiety, depression, and emotional shutdown. Many of them didn\u2019t even identify their experiences as trauma\u2014they just knew they didn\u2019t feel safe, couldn\u2019t sleep, and couldn\u2019t connect with people anymore. It became clear to me that <strong>unprocessed trauma was living beneath the surface<\/strong> of their symptoms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I also spent time working with <strong>adults on probation<\/strong>, and I noticed something similar. Many of the people I worked with had experienced <strong>neglect, abuse, or violence early in life<\/strong>. They were functioning adults, but underneath the surface were layers of unresolved trauma that showed up as depression, anxiety, anger, or self-sabotaging behaviors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These experiences taught me something important: <strong>we can\u2019t talk our way out of trauma.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That\u2019s when I knew I needed deeper, more <strong>drastic tools<\/strong>\u2014like EMDR\u2014to help people not just cope, but truly heal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The Role of EMDR in Healing Anxiety and Depression<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is one of the most powerful tools I use with clients who are ready to process and release the emotional weight they\u2019ve been carrying. What makes EMDR so effective is that it doesn\u2019t rely on talking alone. It helps the brain reprocess memories that are stuck in the nervous system and allows the body to <strong>finally feel safe again.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Many clients come to me after trying traditional therapy and feeling like they\u2019re just going in circles. They know what their issues are\u2014they\u2019ve talked about them\u2014but they still feel stuck. That\u2019s where <strong>CBT<\/strong> is helpful\u2014we work on identifying distorted thinking, reframing unhelpful beliefs, and building better coping tools. Other times, anxiety and depression live in the body, and no amount of thinking changes that. That\u2019s where <strong>SMP<\/strong> helps, by bringing attention to somatic cues, breath, posture, and tension that hold emotional pain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In many cases, I use all three approaches\u2014<strong>CBT, <a href=\"http:\/\/dimitriostherapy.com\/treatments\/eye-movement-desensitization-and-reprocessing-emdr-therapy\/\">EMDR<\/a>, and SMP<\/strong>\u2014depending on where the client is in their healing journey.
